Dighton Historical Commission Reviews Progress on Mount Hope National Register Nomination

DIGHTON — April 14, 2026 — Dighton's Historical Commission received a status update on the National Register of Historic Places nomination for the Mount Hope Finishing Company district at its April 14 meeting, hearing that the Massachusetts Historical Commission has asked for a reformatting of Section 8 before the application advances. Consultant Stacy said MHC reviewer Ben directed her to rewrite the section as a direct argument for eligibility rather than as an extended area form — "write it as if somebody's reading it cold" — and that once changes are submitted he will conduct a full review and a site visit before scheduling the nomination for the state review board. The nomination now covers roughly 27 properties beyond its original scope, including discontiguous parcels across Dighton and into Taunton that Mount Hope owned or occupied but did not build, with some properties deleted for lost integrity or lack of verified ownership. Commission member Zach reported finding original road acceptance blueprints for Mount Hope streets in the town vault that had not previously been incorporated into the nomination research. The commission also voted unanimously to write a letter of support for the Town Clerk's Community Preservation Committee application to conserve, reproduce, and digitize six volumes of permanent vital records, with the treasury balance standing at $569.56 before two pending invoices totaling $117.
