Norton Select Board Reviews Veterans Property Tax Exemption Plan

Norton Select Board previews a veterans property tax exemption fix and welcomes a new public works chief. Board of Assessors Chairman Rick Dorney told the board his panel voted 3-0 on December 16 to recommend a warrant article extending the town's clause 22G exemption to veterans whose homes are in a trust but who aren't listed as trustee, a gap assessors staff said currently affects at least two residents, one who "lost the exemption" after transferring the property. No vote was taken; the board revisits the article before the February 10 Town Meeting article deadline.

Town Manager Mark reported Norton's regional dispatch assessment is rising from $600,000 to $650,000 a year and confirmed Justin Chica starts Monday as the town's first-ever DPW director. The board also approved a roughly $37,000 warrant payment to Jones Fish Hatchery and Distributors that members said appeared conservation-related.
