Taunton School Committee members paused this week to remember longtime youth baseball coach and city attorney David Gay.

TAUNTON -- Local sports news was quiet for the week of July 20-26, but Taunton's youth sports community was remembered during a July 22 School Committee Finance and Law Subcommittee meeting following news of attorney David Gay's death.

COMMUNITY -- Committee members opened the meeting by observing a moment of remembrance for David Gay, who served for decades as the school committee's legal counsel and city solicitor. One committee member recalled spending "21 years in Taunton West Little League" alongside Gay, noting that "David Gay coached the Yankees. His two sons were there. He was dedicated to everybody. He helped every kid." Superintendent Cabral, who said he first met Gay 25 years ago, called him "a great family man, community person, very civic-minded," adding that Gay "loved this country, loved this community, loved this family." Committee members said Gay had been affiliated with the school committee and the city for many years and had no further details on funeral arrangements at the time of the meeting.

No Taunton High School games were reported for the period, and no new registration or schedule updates were posted by Taunton Youth Soccer or Taunton Youth Basketball, whose spring Shootout league season had already concluded in June.
