Taunton School Committee refers special education advisory proposal to Rules Subcommittee

School Committee · Meeting of July 22, 2026

Taunton School Committee votes to study creation of a special education advisory body. The committee unanimously referred to its Rules Subcommittee, comprising Members Santos, Laura, and Chair Schaffs, a proposal to establish some form of advisory structure — subcommittee, task force, or community input team — focused on special education issues, following roughly 20 minutes of debate at the July 22 meeting. Member Santos, who brought the item, cited examples from Bridgeport, Maryland, and California and said the goal was "collaboration and transparency" and ensuring parents "feel heard." Superintendent Cabral cautioned that the district already operates 11 subcommittees, two of which have not yet met, and urged the committee not to overlap with the existing CPAC parent advisory council.

The committee also approved FY26 and FY27 bills-payable warrants totaling approximately $1.16 million, welcomed new Director of Finance Kevin Almeida on approximately his eighth day in the district, and heard from Superintendent Cabral that Governor Healey's proposed $100 million supplemental school funding reserve could deliver roughly $930,000 in one-time FY27 money to Taunton if the Legislature approves it.
