Westport Board of Health unanimously approved a variance-heavy septic repair on a cramped 5,500-square-foot Cabins Neck Road lot and endorsed four additional director-approved plans at its February 2 meeting. Engineer Len Potter of Westport Environmental Design won approval for a three-bedroom denitrification system at 200 Cabins Neck Road for owner Thomas Loftus, requiring waivers reducing the septic tank-to-property-line setback to 5.5 feet and the leaching field-to-cellar-wall distance to 17.5 feet, along with variances cutting the owner's well-to-system setback from 100 to 35 feet and reducing SAS size by 50 percent. The board also approved four routine septic plans — including a commercial upgrade at 6 Union Avenue with a 786-gallon-per-day design — and heard that disposal cost increases have forced a pre-registration cap on the town's Household Hazardous Waste Day, scheduled for March 28 behind the old high school, with registration opening March 1 through Eventbrite.

A board member warned that with fewer than two years before the state's February 2028 cesspool closeout deadline, an already understaffed department faces the prospect of a last-minute surge it may struggle to manage.
