Fall River panel refers ICE school policy to committee
School Committee · Meeting of September 30, 2026
Fall River's School Committee Policy Subcommittee voted to send a new policy on civil immigration enforcement in schools to the full committee, acting after the district missed a state deadline. Keith Michon, president of the Fall River Educators' Association, urged quick action on the policy, required under the state's PROTECT Act signed by Governor Maura Healey on August 5. The panel also tabled a bullying prevention plan after member Colin Dias objected that "this is not a policy, this is a plan," and referred a work-from-home policy to the full committee with no recommendation after member Stewart argued "you're too ill to come into work, you're too ill to be working from home." The district's new chief financial officer, identified only as Aldo, told the panel he wants a safe installed at every school after finding no formal cash-handling procedure beyond school lunch programs.
Consultant Sean Costello of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees said his group cannot begin reviewing the district's policy manual because the district has not supplied an up-to-date version.
