Flooring contractor finds asbestos, plan put on hold
Council on Aging · Meeting of April 22, 2026
Somerset Council on Aging hits an asbestos snag on its flooring contract. Staffer Cindy told the board that a contractor who signed an April 13 agreement to replace center flooring discovered asbestos tiles in the hallway during a walkthrough, forcing a redesign that skips the planned subfloor in favor of gluing down higher-grade flooring, with the job now eyed for the first week of June. The board also pulled a kitchen renovation off the town warrant, saying it needs a firm cost estimate before bidding a modest breakfast-and-lunch kitchen rather than a full commercial buildout.
The gifts account stood at $9,852.09, the grant account at $27,082.41. Members debated Pierce Beach versus an on-site cookout June 17 for an expected 100-plus seniors, police and firefighters. "He said absolutely not, that they would not be doing subfloors in the hallways because of the asbestos tiles," Cindy said.
