Attleboro panel rejects diploma, timer policy changes

School Committee · Meeting of September 14, 2026

Attleboro School Committee splits on a graduation diploma rule and a public-comment timer, while easing enrollment pressure from redistricting. The panel raised the high school's student-activities account cap from $80,000 to $120,000 on Finance Director Brittany Perella's request, and waived $5,469.87 in overdue lunch debt owed by 49 families. Chairman Robert Geddes' proposal to limit diploma handouts to administrators and current members failed 1-6-1; a separate plan letting the chair post a speaker countdown timer failed 3-5.

Member Bennett said "our reputations are on the line with every diploma that we give out." Administrators reported "school full" placements dropped from 50 students last year to 15 this fall under redistricting, even as late and unregistered enrollment surged to 800-900 families this summer, roughly double a typical year. The superintendent warned "year in year out more and more money goes to health insurance, and that's less and less money that goes to kids."
