Conservation Board OKs Wilfrid's Garage Rebuild
Conservation · Meeting of September 29, 2026
Westport Conservation Commission approves a riverfront rebuild of Wilfrid's Garage and an emergency fix for flooded Richmond Pond Lane. The commission voted unanimously to let owner Christopher Cotta replace the garage at 427 Main Road on its existing footprint, with the new building sitting 33 feet from a bordering wetland and 65.7 feet from Snell Creek, under a state exemption for small, pre-1996 riverfront lots. Conservation Agent Chris Crowley separately won approval of an emergency certification letting Richmond Pond Lane landowners excavate a storm-blocked drainage outlet after a nor'easter dropped up to 5.5 inches of rain and left a foot and a half of water over their access road.
"They're really just kicking the ball down the road," Crowley said, renewing his push for landowners to permanently raise the roadway. The board also closed out a dock permit at 44 Palmer Lane for Susan Esty, granted a three-year beach-nourishment extension to Paul and Christine Westley at 74 East Beach Road, continued three other wetlands hearings to October 27 and paid a $64.50 advertising bill.
