Somerset panel approves park gazebo over objections
Conservation · Meeting of September 21, 2026
Somerset Conservation Commission unanimously approves a gazebo addition to Massasoit Park despite neighbor pushback over parking and flooding. The panel amended Department of Environmental Protection file No. 070-0560 to add a 24-by-12-foot, 8-foot gazebo, built in-house under Chris Simons, funded by roughly $150,000 in Department of Justice settlement money tied to environmental violations at CDC and Brayton Point LLC. Ripley Street resident Maria Souza raised erosion and nighttime parking complaints, while neighbor Brian argued added amenities would draw more late-night visitors and noise; the commission agreed to pursue no-parking signage and solar motion-lighting ideas with police.
A written objection from resident Jody Dupers calling the project "redundant" and warning of "active severe flooding" at her street was read into the record and rejected by members as "an opinion not based in any fact." The commission also discussed a future memorial for the late Ed Barriac, credited with helping end Brayton Point scrap-metal operations.
