Easton ESC Discovers Quorum Gap Mid-Meeting

Other Committee · Meeting of August 18, 2026

Easton's ESC learns mid-meeting it has two more members than it thought, casting doubt on its own votes. Chair Carolyn McCafferty, checking the town website during the August 18 meeting, discovered Brett Silverman had already been appointed to a seat through 2029, pushing the committee's roster from five to seven and leaving only three members, McCafferty, Rachel Rosen and Amy Spencer, present for a vote to approve minutes and a 3-0 roll call to adjourn. "I have a feeling any of our votes today were probably not valid because the membership got bigger," McCafferty said.

The committee, which has no operating budget and has covered past printing costs from members' own pockets, also advanced plans for a fall composting workshop with the nonprofit NRT and agreed to seek an in-person September meeting to formally welcome Silverman and a previously sworn student representative.
