Acushnet selectmen back a Dartmouth-led letter opposing state zoning mandates and approve a $247,750 loader grant. The Select Board unanimously endorsed a letter to state Sen. Matigny and Rep.
Markey opposing bills including S.3228 and November's Ballot Question 7, with the chairman calling proposed 5,000-square-foot-lot development a "losing proposition" for town revenue. DPW Director Dan Menard secured the $247,750 MassDOT grant for a new Caterpillar loader and, with his twin brother David, received the Acushnet Lions Club's Helen Keller Award for organizing the club's clambake. The board also approved up to $27,000 in emergency sewer pump-station repairs after a control panel failed during a snowstorm, appointed Jeffrey Yawath deputy director of Emergency Management and Casey Lee Soul as principal assessor, and aired frustration over a proposed 9 percent annual New Bedford water rate increase.
