Select Board adopts new grant oversight policy
Select Board · Meeting of September 28, 2026
Westport Select Board adopts grant oversight policy after speed-hump funding surprise. The board voted 4-0 to let Town Administrator Vitale sign off on routine, already-budgeted grants while requiring board votes for larger grants, after members said they were "news to us when they come before the select board" on projects like Old County Road's speed humps. The board also appointed Anna Vertentes, a 10-year Pawtucket, Rhode Island officer, as Westport's third female police officer effective Jan. 10, 2027, and awarded the department's Life-Saving Award to Officer David Simcoe and Harbormaster Captain William Chase for reviving an unresponsive boater on July 4.
Separately, the board approved a $300,000 MassDEP grant toward a $1.1 million water main extension to the Briggs Road Fire Station and opened the bay scallop season starting Oct. 17.
