Freetown board keeps beach field, oks roundabout test
Select Board · Meeting of September 14, 2026
Freetown keeps Town Beach football field as is, greenlights roundabout test. The Select Board voted unanimously to leave the field in its current orientation after Assonet Junior Football Cheer president Samantha Simmons argued a proposed rotation would cost the roughly 160-athlete program its only practice space. The board separately accepted federal Safe Streets for All funding for a temporary "mock roundabout" at the crash-prone Assonet Four Corners intersection, which Town Planner Nancy Durford said carries 50,000 to 55,000 vehicles weekly.
Resident Amy Murphy St. Lawrence, who said she's lost her fence twice to crashes there, pushed for "a very clear metric on what we mean when we say that it works." The board also approved three stop signs at Algonquin Way and Wamsutta Way after residents described a dog struck by a car, awarded a $184,791 sidewalk bid to Dandle Construction Inc., and advanced a $1.8 million design contract for a new Council on Aging and library building.
